Trump Cuts G7 Trip Short as Iran–Israel Conflict Escalates Into Fifth Day

June 17, 2025 President Donald Trump has stormed out of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada with less than a day since his arrival back to the United States. This action which has drawn the attention of the world over is facing a serious rage in hostilities between Iran and Israel which are currently underway in its fifth consecutive day of severe rallying in military acts. Trump, according to CNN International chose to leave the G7 early due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East, which the White House explained by the words of a senior official whose source confirmed that the President had ordered the national security team to meet again in the White House Situation Room on his arrival home. The Washington Post further asserted that the intelligence assessment of the possibility of broader regional spillover should hostilities continue to escalate was considered by the U.S officials as a high probability with alarm. Trump left in the middle of meetings with leaders on the Ukraine and global economy putting the other G7 leaders in the scramble to rearrange their programs. European leaders were concerned by the developing vacuum of diplomatic leadership as the dispute escalates especially with reports of missile attacks near the main energy centres of both Israel and Iran causing violent reactions out of the oil markets that are reported not to have fared well. In the same breath, Associated Press has pointed out that the sudden departure of Trump is also the time when a bipartisan push is rising within the Congress to determine the administration on its stand regarding military involvement. Members of Congress of both parties have demanded classified briefings on situation, and there are initial signs of some wanting some form of legislative involvement in any action taken by U.S. forces. At the same time, the Time Magazine said that some Middle East allies such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have made statements that urge all parties to act in restraint over the possibility that neighboring countries would be dragged in the conflict. The world is now closely monitoring how the United States adjusted its presence in what might be the most explosive regional conflict in the decade.

Rising Tensions Between Iran and Israel

Violence has been running in the region since late last week. In a report published by Reuters, Israeli troops claimed targeted airstrikes on presumable Iranian missile silos, drone launch pads, and command posts in Tehran, Isfahan, and Tabriz. In reactions, Iran has retaliated by raining ballistic missiles and long-range drones that target prime cities in Israel, Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Beersheba. According to The Wall street Journal, Iran has retaliated with high precision drones and Shahab-class missiles which have struck military targets as well as civilian infrastructure in northern Israel. Among the gravest ones, a strike at the refinery area of Haifa caused secondary fires and environmental warnings. There has been an increase on civil causalities on either sides. According to Al Jazeera, there are already over 250 people killed already in Iran and Israel combined, and the number of those injured is even higher. The hospital system in Tel Aviv and Tehran has been reduced to emergency levels and both governments already encouraged its citizens to remain at home or leave to less affected territories.

The Warning of Tehran Evacuation by Trump

Against the backdrop of such events, President Trump made a sensational message on his Truth Social account, where he alerted the residents of Tehran to evacuate. According to BBC News, this message sent panic in the capital of Iran. crowding major highways out of  city, fuel stations became busy with queues of people and many citizens raced to withdraw money and hoard necessities. French news network France 24 also states that the Iranian government has reacted by dismissing the possibility of the direct American strike and instead instituted emergency response plans in several Iranian cities and especially Tehran and the adjacent provinces as armies poured in. Though it is not clear the motivation behind the evacuation warnings issued by Trump, a lot of analysts feel that it could have been triggered by an indication that an attack by Israel is imminent against command-and-control centers in Tehran or Iran may sneak out and attack its nuclear installations.

U.S. Military Posture Strengthens

There have been serious increases in American military preparedness in the area despite the promise that America is not directly engaged in the war in Israel. According to Politico, the Pentagon has sent a third Navy destroyer into the eastern Mediterranean and a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Arabian Sea. A total of dozens of aerial refueling tankers has been already deployed in Europe in anticipation of long-term operations in the region. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made this point clear, according to a Fox News press briefing, in that the United States is willing and able to support its interests and allies but, nevertheless, is not willing to encounter and engage in a conflict that it does not need. In a second post, Trump said: “In the event we are attacked it will be with a flood of fire and fury like we have never seen before…. at levels contemplated before.” His statements have led to concern in the international community regarding the possibilities of the greater war, especially in the event of the attack of the American soldiers or interests in Iraq, Syria and Persian Gulf.

G 7 Fallout and Ceasefire Assertions

The fact that the President Trump opted out of the G7 summit early on put the group of industrialized nations on shock. According to The Guardian, other leaders of the G7 were supposed to talk about Ukraine, climate change, and international trade. Trump did not bother taking these sessions at all. President Emmanuel Macron of France told reporters in a press briefing (reported by Le Monde) he thought that the U.S. was embarking upon a cease fire between Israel and Iran. According to Macron, the departure of Trump might be associated with the backchannel negotiations that were underway.  But Trump quickly dismissed this story saying that Macron is wrong and that this is not just cease-fire offer. According to NBC News, he reaffirmed that the aggression being acted by Iran had to be countered by responding forcefully and with deterrence, not half measures. There was a subsequent joint statement by the G7 devoid of the Independent, in which they supported Israel in the right to self-defense, and all parties to de-escalate, citing that should conflict continue the global oil trade would enter crisis and destabilize other parts of the region.

Iran Revives Nuclear Ambitions

Nuclear warfare in Iran is also been put in question by the conflict. The U.S. intelligence has also been warning Iran may take advantage of the chaos to increase the rate of enrichment of uranium in secret facilities where it was not subject to the inspection of the inspectors as reported by The New York Times. In an interview on television that Trump participated in and that was reported by Sky News, the president said that we presented an opportunity to Iran to make a deal but now they might have waited too long. He pointed out that the U.S. will not permit Iran to build up a nuclear weapon at all costs. Those western diplomats who encouraged Iran to comply with Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) once again include German and the United Kingdom. Some European foreign ministers have also told their Iranian counterparts to de-escalate and get back to negotiation, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

Conclusion- What Next?

According to the single reporting by Politico, the White House is also actively discussing the possibility of sending the U.S. envoys to meet with regional powers to discuss de-escalation avenues, including Trump advisor Steve Witkoff and Vice President J.D. Vance. This, however, will still depend on the behavior of Iran and the security environment. It is probably that the U.S. military presence will keep expanding. The Wall Street Journal insists that the second aircraft carrier and air tankers confirm longer preparations, and not a temporary deterrent. The Pentagon has clarified that any assault on American troops would result in a half a million response. Also, CNN international had quoted that the president Trump had called on the individuals of Tehran to move out and this has put colossal pressure both locally and internationally on the Iranian government. International aid agencies are having backup plans on the possibility of refugee influxes or civilian deaths in case of widened conflicts.

In other news reported by France 24, attempts by France, Germany, and the UK to persuade a regional ceasefire and new nuclear negotiation round have not succeeded yet. The Iranian leadership has been very stubborn and its Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that, the only response to the Zionistic aggression is resistance. In Washington, cross party initiatives are being done to provide restraint on unilateral executive military activity. According to NBC News, this has involved briefings requested by members on both sides of the isle, and proposed draft resolutions to put Congressial oversight back on its footing. The bottom line is that the following chapter can turn out to be either military escalation or a diplomatic compromise, which involves a range of factors: Israeli targeting choices, Iranian revenge patterns, Trump internal math, and diplomatic pressure coming to the international community. The decadence of the situation that is going on in the Middle East is demonstrated by the fact that President Trump had to walk away early in the encounter of the G7 summit. As Israel and Iran are engaged in the most potentially hazardous collision in years, and with American high stakes directly on the line, the world leaders are awaiting vexing dilemma anew: will they be able to reach a diplomatic off-ramp, or will they be seeing a first major regional war in ages?
